Profhilo is often described as a “skin booster”, but that shorthand can make it sound more like a moisturising injection than a medical aesthetic treatment. The useful question is not whether Profhilo is fashionable or “worth it” in the abstract. It is whether its mechanism and likely outcome match what you actually want to change.
What Profhilo actually is
Profhilo is an injectable hyaluronic-acid product designed to spread through the tissue rather than sit in one place like a conventional volumising filler. It is used with a skin-quality and bioremodelling aim rather than to build cheek, lip or jawline volume.
The original Face for Soul article made this distinction clearly: Profhilo is not a filler and it should not be sold as one. It is most relevant where hydration, elasticity and overall skin quality are the priorities.
What treatment is like
Treatment involves a small number of injections at planned points. Temporary raised bumps at the injection sites, redness, tenderness, swelling or bruising can occur. These usually settle, but recovery varies and the risks of any injectable treatment should be discussed before proceeding.
When results appear
Profhilo is not an instant contouring treatment. Changes in hydration and skin quality develop over the weeks after treatment. A commonly used treatment protocol involves two sessions approximately four weeks apart, although the exact plan should follow assessment and current product guidance.
Who Profhilo may suit
- Skin that feels dehydrated or has lost some resilience.
- Early to moderate change in skin quality where adding facial volume is not the main goal.
- Patients who want gradual, subtle improvement rather than an immediate structural change.
- Areas such as the face, neck, décolletage or other appropriate body areas where skin quality is the concern.
What Profhilo does not do
Profhilo cannot replace facial volume that has genuinely been lost, remove significant excess skin or reproduce the lifting effect of surgery. It is also not the treatment for every textural concern. Acne scarring, marked pigmentation, active inflammatory skin disease and structural volume loss may need a different plan.
How long do results last?
The original article described maintenance at around six months for many patients. In practice, longevity varies with age, skin quality, lifestyle and the individual's response. A maintenance plan should be based on review rather than a fixed promise.
Is Profhilo worth it?
For the right indication, Profhilo can be a useful treatment. It is less likely to feel worthwhile when a patient expects it to behave like filler, erase significant laxity or create an immediate transformation. The value comes from matching the treatment to the concern rather than choosing it because it is popular.
Profhilo versus other skin-quality treatments
Profhilo, polynucleotides, microneedling, radiofrequency microneedling and other regenerative approaches are not interchangeable. Their mechanisms, downtime and treatment goals differ. Sometimes a patient needs one; sometimes treatments are sequenced; sometimes skincare is the more proportionate starting point.

What does the evidence actually support?
Published clinical studies and recent systematic reviews report improvements in hydration, elasticity, density and some measures of laxity after treatment with hybrid cooperative complexes of high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. The evidence is encouraging, but the literature is still relatively small and several studies involve manufacturer-linked authors or open-label designs. That means Profhilo can be discussed as an evidence-supported skin-quality treatment without pretending the data are as mature as those for long-established medical therapies.
Profhilo is not the same as a dermal filler
Traditional fillers are selected partly for their ability to create shape, projection or focal support. Profhilo is designed to diffuse more broadly through tissue and is not intended to sculpt the cheek, chin or jawline in the same way. If a patient has genuine structural volume loss, choosing Profhilo because they are nervous of filler may leave the main problem untreated.
Who may be disappointed?
- patients expecting an immediate lift;
- patients with significant jowling or redundant skin;
- patients wanting a visible change in facial shape;
- patients whose main concern is acne scarring, pigmentation or active inflammatory disease;
- patients who expect one session to deliver a permanent result.
Frequently asked questions
Does Profhilo make the face puffy?
Temporary injection-site swelling or small raised bumps can occur, but the product is not intended to create the persistent volumising effect of a filler.
Is it safer because it is not filler?
It is still an injectable treatment with risks including bruising, swelling, infection and vascular complications associated with injections. The risk profile and technique differ from volumising filler, but “not filler” does not mean “no risk”.
Can it be combined with other treatments?
Yes, where there is a clear rationale, but sequencing matters. Skin quality, structural support and resurfacing are separate goals and do not all need treatment at the same appointment.
