Consult & assess
Your skin, scar pattern, pigment history, medication, recent procedures and goals are reviewed. The consultation may also conclude that skincare, another treatment, waiting or no treatment is more appropriate.
MICRONEEDLING · BURFORD, OXFORDSHIRE
Controlled skin remodelling for selected scarring, texture and photoageing concerns.
Microneedling uses fine sterile needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin, initiating a wound-healing response associated with collagen and extracellular-matrix remodelling over time.
At Face for Soul in Burford, microneedling is considered only after assessment with Vaiva Mikalauskaite, Pharmacist Independent Prescriber, who reviews what is driving the concern, the condition of the skin and whether microneedling is the right mechanism for it.
01 · THE TREATMENT
The procedure creates controlled micro-injury using fine needles. This activates repair signalling and a remodelling response within the skin rather than adding volume, relaxing muscle or delivering heat energy.
Over time, this wound-healing process is associated with fibroblast activity and changes in collagen and extracellular matrix. Clinical improvement is gradual rather than immediate.
Standard microneedling is different from radiofrequency microneedling. Devices such as Morpheus8 combine needle penetration with controlled RF energy. The two procedures should not be described as interchangeable.
Fine sterile needles create controlled micro-injury at a depth selected for the indication.
The skin initiates a wound-healing response through inflammatory and cellular signalling.
Fibroblast activity and extracellular-matrix remodelling continue after the appointment.
Texture and selected scar characteristics may improve progressively rather than overnight.
02 · SUITABILITY
The decision is not simply whether microneedling can be performed. It is whether it is likely to be useful and proportionate for the problem you are presenting with.
IT MAY BE CONSIDERED WHEN
ANOTHER ROUTE MAY COME FIRST WHEN
CLINICAL RESTRAINT
Microneedling is useful for specific skin indications. It does not restore facial volume, permanently close pores, replace management of active skin disease or guarantee a particular finish.
Scar morphology
Rolling, boxcar and ice-pick scars do not necessarily respond in the same way.
Skin activity
Active inflammation, infection or an unstable barrier can change treatment timing.
Pigment response
Fitzpatrick skin type and a history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation inform planning.
The wider face
If what looks like skin ageing is mainly structural, another route may be more relevant.
03 · THE APPOINTMENT
Technique and treatment depth are selected according to indication and area. There is no single setting or universal protocol for every patient.
Your skin, scar pattern, pigment history, medication, recent procedures and goals are reviewed. The consultation may also conclude that skincare, another treatment, waiting or no treatment is more appropriate.
Skincare may be adjusted if the barrier is irritated or active products need pausing. The treatment area is prepared and topical numbing cream may be used where appropriate.
Fine sterile needles create controlled microchannels. Depth and technique vary by area and clinical objective.
The skin may look red and feel warm, tight or sensitive. Aftercare is deliberately simple and barrier-conscious.
Visible recovery happens sooner than biological remodelling. Further treatment is planned according to indication and response rather than a fixed package.
04 · RESULTS & RECOVERY
Redness, warmth and sensitivity are common. Mild swelling can occur.
Dryness, tightness, mild swelling or flaking may be present.
Visible recovery generally progresses, although individual healing varies.
Biological remodelling continues after obvious redness has settled.
PLANNING
A course may be considered, but the number and spacing of sessions depend on the indication, scar pattern, treatment depth and response. There is no standard course that suits every patient.
There is no single duration that applies to every concern. Scar remodelling, texture improvement and maintenance for photoageing are different objectives.
UNDERSTANDING RISK
Temporary erythema, irritation, sensitivity, dryness and swelling are common. Less common adverse effects reported in the literature include pigmentary change, inflammatory reactions and scarring. Individual risk is part of assessment and consent.
05 · BEFORE & AFTERCARE
Aftercare varies according to treatment depth and skin response. The principle is simple: keep the skin clean, avoid unnecessary irritation and prioritise barrier support and photoprotection while the skin recovers.
Vaiva may adjust active skincare if the skin is irritated or if certain products need pausing before treatment.
Redness and sensitivity are managed with simple, barrier-conscious care rather than a long list of actives.
Broad-spectrum SPF is important while the skin is recovering and remains part of longer-term skin health.
THE SKIN APOTHECARY
These are examples of products stocked by Face for Soul that may support cleansing, barrier care or photoprotection around a microneedling plan. Exact aftercare depends on treatment depth, skin response and Vaiva's instructions.

The consultation is designed to answer that before treatment is chosen.
06 · CHOOSING THE MECHANISM
Different treatments act through different mechanisms. The relevant question is which mechanism matches the problem.
07 · CLINICAL EVIDENCE
Published reviews support microneedling as an option for selected indications, particularly atrophic acne scarring and aspects of facial rejuvenation. However, devices, treatment protocols, combination approaches and outcome measures vary between studies, so evidence should not be translated into universal promises for every patient.
08 · LONGER-TERM SKIN PLANNING
Some patients choose to incorporate microneedling into a longer-term skin plan rather than booking isolated appointments. Longer-term planning can be discussed at consultation once suitability, treatment priorities and appropriate spacing are clear.
09 · COMMON QUESTIONS
It may be considered for selected atrophic acne scars, uneven skin texture, the appearance of visible pores and some photoageing-related fine lines. Suitability depends on the indication, scar morphology, skin activity and individual risk profile.
It can be useful for selected atrophic acne scars, but rolling, boxcar and ice-pick scars do not necessarily respond in the same way. Scar morphology is assessed before deciding whether microneedling, another technique or combination treatment is more appropriate.
Active inflammatory acne in the treatment area may mean treatment should wait while the skin is stabilised. Treating through active inflammation or infection may be inappropriate.
Redness, warmth, sensitivity, mild swelling, dryness or flaking can occur. Many patients experience relatively short visible downtime, but recovery varies according to depth, area treated and individual skin response.
There is no universal number. A course may be considered, but the number and spacing of sessions depend on the indication, scar pattern, treatment depth and response.
Duration depends on what is being treated. Scar remodelling, texture improvement and maintenance for photoageing are different objectives. Ageing, sun exposure, skincare and individual biology continue over time, so there is no single duration that applies to every patient.
Microneedling can be considered across a range of skin tones. Fitzpatrick skin type, previous post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and individual pigment response are considered during treatment planning and aftercare.
Selected periorbital areas may be considered, but skin thickness, anatomy, the cause of the concern and whether another treatment is more appropriate all need assessment first.
No. Standard microneedling is a mechanical needling procedure. Morpheus8 is radiofrequency microneedling and combines needle penetration with controlled RF energy.
Selected patients may be considered for PRF alongside microneedling as part of a broader regenerative plan. Whether combination treatment adds value, and how it should be sequenced, is decided during assessment.
Aftercare is usually simplified and barrier-conscious, with attention to cleanliness and broad-spectrum photoprotection. Exact instructions vary according to treatment depth and skin response, so follow the plan provided by the clinic.
Face for Soul is based in Burford, Oxfordshire, serving patients from West Oxfordshire and the wider Cotswolds. Microneedling is considered following consultation and individual assessment.
