Consult & assess
The whole face, medical history, previous injectables and treatment priorities are reviewed.
SCULPTRA · BURFORD, OXFORDSHIRE
Gradual collagen-stimulating treatment for selected facial support and skin-quality changes.
Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid treatment. It is different from hyaluronic-acid filler: the aim is not immediate gel-based correction, but gradual tissue change following carefully planned treatment.
01 · THE TREATMENT
Sculptra uses poly-L-lactic acid, or PLLA, as a biocompatible and biodegradable injectable implant.
After reconstitution and injection, PLLA particles create a local tissue response associated with new collagen formation over time. The visible change develops gradually rather than appearing as an immediate gel-based result.
This does not mean Sculptra is simply a slower dermal filler. Product placement, treatment area, dilution, anatomy and treatment objective all matter, and the effect cannot be reversed with hyaluronidase in the way hyaluronic-acid filler can.
Facial structure, tissue quality, laxity, volume pattern, movement and previous treatment are considered together.
The treatment is mapped around whole-face support rather than chasing individual lines.
Reconstituted PLLA is placed in selected areas using a technique appropriate to anatomy and the treatment plan.
Change is assessed over time before deciding whether another session or another mechanism is needed.

02 · SUITABILITY
Facial ageing can involve bone, fat, skin, ligaments, tissue descent and muscle movement. Sculptra is considered only when a gradual biostimulatory approach fits the pattern.

VAIVA'S ASSESSMENT
Sculptra is only one mechanism. Assessment determines whether the concern is best approached with PLLA, another injectable, energy-based treatment, skincare, waiting or no treatment.
Burford · West Oxfordshire · Cotswolds
Diffuse tissue loss is separated from focal contour change and from normal facial anatomy.
Skin quality, laxity, tissue thickness and structural support are considered together.
One area is not treated in isolation if the wider proportions suggest a different plan.
Health, medicines, previous injectables, healing history and relevant contraindications are reviewed.
The gradual nature of PLLA treatment and the possibility of more than one session are discussed before treatment.
Dermal filler, Radiesse, Profhilo, microneedling, skincare or no treatment may fit better.

CLINICAL RESTRAINT
03 · APPOINTMENT
Technique, amount and timing depend on anatomy, indication and response. The consultation may also conclude that Sculptra is not the right mechanism.
The whole face, medical history, previous injectables and treatment priorities are reviewed.
The areas, expected sequence and whether another treatment should come first are agreed.
Sculptra is reconstituted and injected using a technique appropriate to the planned area and product instructions.
Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising can occur. Specific aftercare is explained at the appointment.
Early post-injection fullness is not the final result. The longer-term response is reviewed before further treatment is planned.
04 · RESULTS & RECOVERY
Swelling and fluid from reconstitution can create temporary fullness immediately after treatment.
Swelling, tenderness and bruising usually reduce. The face may look closer to baseline as this settles.
The intended collagen-related tissue response develops progressively rather than appearing overnight.
Further treatment depends on the original goal, response and whether the wider face still needs support.
The objective may be softer restoration of support, improved facial proportion or selected changes in skin and tissue quality. Results vary and should be judged over time rather than immediately after injection.
There is no universal course. Published studies and clinical protocols commonly use more than one session, but treatment number and spacing are individual.
Bruising, swelling, tenderness, palpable or visible nodules and inflammatory reactions can occur. Because PLLA is not a hyaluronic-acid gel, it cannot simply be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
05 · BEFORE & AFTERCARE
Aftercare should follow Vaiva's instructions for the product, treatment area and technique rather than generic filler advice copied from elsewhere.
Tell the clinic about medicines, supplements, recent procedures, previous injectables and any changes in health before treatment.
Avoid unnecessary pressure or manipulation beyond the specific aftercare you are advised to follow.
Keep skincare sensible around treatment and maintain appropriate daily photoprotection.

Sculptra, filler and other collagen-focused treatments solve different problems.
06 · CHOOSING THE MECHANISM
What matters is the tissue problem, the desired timing of change and the anatomical area being treated.
07 · CLINICAL EVIDENCE
A 2024 systematic review of 20 facial PLLA studies, including four randomised controlled trials, reported generally favourable outcomes and mostly mild self-limiting adverse effects. A separate 2024 systematic review restricted to randomised trials included 11 RCTs and concluded that the evidence for facial rejuvenation remained low quality, with five of the eleven studies judged at high risk of bias. This supports a cautious interpretation: PLLA can be useful, but published results should not be translated into universal promises.
08 · LONGER-TERM PLANNING
Some patients may have an initial course and later reassessment. Others may need a different mechanism or no further injectable treatment.
09 · FAQs
Sculptra is an injectable implant containing poly-L-lactic acid, or PLLA. It is supplied as a sterile powder and reconstituted before injection.
It is classified as an injectable implant and is often grouped with fillers, but it behaves differently from hyaluronic-acid gel filler. Its intended aesthetic effect develops gradually through tissue response rather than immediate gel-based volume replacement.
Temporary fullness from the injected fluid can be visible immediately, but that is not the final outcome. The intended longer-term change develops gradually over the following weeks and months.
There is no universal number. Published protocols commonly use more than one session, but the plan should be individualised to anatomy, indication and response.
No. Hyaluronidase dissolves hyaluronic-acid filler, not poly-L-lactic acid. That is one reason careful product selection, placement and conservative planning matter.
Yes. Palpable or visible nodules and inflammatory reactions are recognised complications of PLLA treatment. Technique, reconstitution, placement and aftercare are important, but no injectable treatment is risk-free.
They solve different problems. Dermal filler may be used for selected areas needing more immediate and precise structural support, while Sculptra is chosen for gradual biostimulatory change where that mechanism fits the anatomy.
